Bye-bye, Cousin Lavinia
My memories of Lavinia go back to childhood. At first, I couldn't pronounce her name, so initially, it was Vinia, Mum often took me around to Grandma and Grandads, where Auntie Flo and Lavinia lived with them at 155, London Road. Quite often our other cousins would be there and we'd all play in Grandads large grounds, there were several hen pens, where we'd collect eggs, and the huge glasshouses, where we'd pinch a few under ripe tomatoes, before being chased off by Grandad who was always quite fierce looking. We also used to pinch Grandma's Cucumber and Onion soaking in vinegar in the pantry, yummy.
We'd play hide and seek and other childhood games with our other cousins and friends from across the road and further up the terrace.
We often spent Christmas at Grandma's or 155 as we called, the house would be full of Auntie, Uncles and cousins, and I often had a sleepover, topping and tailing with Lavinia in her bed, she would grab the large egg timer out the kitchen and we'd take it in turns to scratch each others back though Lavinia often cheated turning the egg timer over so she got longer. She also used to scare me with stories about the bogie man who lived in the built-in cupboard in the bedroom. On more than one occasion, Auntie Flo would come up to bed to find me asleep curled up on the mat after Lavinia had pushed me out of bed.
Has Lavinia got older she was really attractive.
We went to Great Yarmouth for a week, travelling by train. It was heaving with returning servicemen, no seats were available and they let us sit on their large canvas bags etc in the corridor sharing food and bottles of water, Lavinia was a great asset has they all came chatting to her. Auntie Flo got everyone singing to pass the time, and the men eventually kindly found us seats in a carriage with them.
Auntie Flo was a lovely kind lady, always happy to help anyone and
Lavinia took after her. She was adored by most people, especially my Dad. Dad would pop in to see her regularly, and as he got older and lost his sight, she visited him most weeks. Lavinia was loved by so many people whose lives she touched and will be greatly missed.
God Bless you Lavinia, sleep tight and mind the bed bugs dont bite.....Cousin Jane x x
