Remembering a good friend and inspiration.
John Boulter
We met Tony when we moved to Hinckley nearly thirty years ago, and joined Concordia AOS. Tony was very kind to us.
After a while he sent us the loveliest letter saying he realised how difficult it was moving into a new area and new society, and he was impressed by how we were blending in.
His words and many kindnesses were very much appreciated.

Tony taught me English at Hinckley Grammar School. He was an excellent teacher, not only because of his dramatic skills and his profound knowledge of his subject but because his classroom always had a sense of warmth and calmness about it – it was an enjoyable place where children could relax and learn. The creation of such an environment showed his great skill as an educator. Students were always eager to attend the classes of this colourful, kind and highly effective teacher.
From his students he elicited an enthusiasm for English Literature. Dickens, Lord of the Flies, My Family and Other Animals, 20th Century poetry – I can’t remember them all. And of course Shakespeare. And despite its difficult old and arcane usage, Mr Howkins managed to communicate the human paradoxes and dilemmas within the plays, getting all the class to think on, discuss and perform.
Tony will be sadly missed.

Tony Howkins entered my life at school as a superb English teacher who developed my love of acting, helped me prepare for Drama School auditions and opened a world of theatre which became my life. When I had a book on Shakespeare published in 1996, I dedicated it to him. From the opening of the Concordia Theatre, I often found myself acting with or being directed by Tony. He was a genuine gentleman and will be sadly missed by so many in Hinckley.

Tony Howkins advised us to go out with each other, lent us his car to do so and came to our wedding 49 years ago.

Tony Howkins was my English and Drama teacher at Hinckley Grammar School in the 1960s. Fond memories of the 6th Form Review and 'Much Ado About Nothing'.
