In 1972 the Queen and Prince Philip celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, Leeds United beat Arsenal to win the FA Cup, David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's new comedy "Are You Being Served?" hit the airwaves, and kids had their first chance to ride the iconic Raleigh Chopper!

And on 27th January David Barsby, now Chairman of G. Seller funeral directors, graduated from the British Institute of Embalmers with the highest marks in the country beginning a journey that has gone from strength to strength.

After moving G. Seller to bespoke new premises in Upper Bond Street in 1968, David’s dad Charlie Barsby decided it was time to prepare for the next generation to take over. David remembers his father’s words when he encouraged him to become a fully-fledged Funeral Director:

“… they were as true then as they are today and it continues to be our core ethos: If something is worth doing, it needs doing well”.

In the years that followed David set about transforming the business and thanks to his efforts it now occupies a proud place at the forefront of bereavement care.

“It was about putting some polish to the business with the greatest attention to customer service. We have served people across the country from Southampton to Glasgow. We have buried people at sea and have conducted funerals from the simple to the flamboyant – everyone has their own way of saying goodbye, and we are here to put a befitting service together for them, whatever the request.”

David is still closely involved in the business, though the day-to-day running is now in the hands of Managing Director Joseph Barsby, David’s son. Joseph is the third generation in a row to run the company.

“Dad has been the driving force behind the business for 50 years now. His core values are key to how we conduct ourselves every single day and I’m immensely proud and grateful for everything he has done.”

Happy 50th Anniversary David C Barsby!
