A Labour Of Love

We have strong links to the community here at G. Seller with one such activity being the sponsorship of Wigston Brass Band.

Back in December, Chris Small, Musical Director of Wigston Brass band made a journey of a lifetime to Uganda where he undertook his first duties as the Mbale Schools Band's International Music Director. By profession Chris is a music educator and he relished the opportunity to head off to Uganda to support the 'most widely seen brass band in the world' that was created by Philip Monk who was also once based in Leicestershire.

An advert placed for an International Music Director resulted in a conversation between Chris and Philip and the rest is already history as Chris has completed his first trip in advance of the bands scheduled tour of Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

Chris was delighted with the trip adding that "it was such a humbling experience. They were some of the happiest people I've ever met, and some of the most hard working. They were so welcoming and so eager to learn. It really is quite simply a labour of love."

The talent was evident too, as Chris adds "I would have had five or six of them in my band at Wigston - that's how good they were! I found their technique was excellent."

As part of his role as International Music Director, the plan is for Chris to go out to Uganda once a year as he continues to work with Philip on the development of the project.
